Surah 66

At-Tahrim

The Prohibition

سُورَةُ التَّحۡرِيمِ

Medinan 12 Verses

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1

Ayah 1

Ya ayyuha alnnabiyyu lima tuharrimu ma ahalla Allahu laka tabtaghee mardata azwajika waAllahu ghafoorun raheemun

Yā 'Ayyuhā An-Nabīyu Lima Tuĥarrimu Mā 'Aĥalla Allāhu Laka Tabtaghī Marđāata 'Azwājika Wa Allāhu Ghafūrun Raĥīmun

Prophet, in seeking the pleasure of your wives, why do you make unlawful that which God has made lawful. God is All-forgiving and All-merciful

Ayah 2

Qad farada Allahu lakum tahillata aymanikum waAllahu mawlakum wahuwa alAAaleemu alhakeemu

Qad Farađa Allāhu Lakum Taĥillata 'Aymānikum Wa Allāhu Mawlākum Wa Huwa Al-`Alīmu Al-Ĥakīmu

God has shown you how to absolve yourselves of your oaths. He is your Guardian and is All-knowing and All-wise

Ayah 3

Waith asarra alnnabiyyu ila baAAdi azwajihi hadeethan falamma nabbaat bihi waathharahu Allahu AAalayhi AAarrafa baAAdahu waaAArada AAan baAAdin falamma nabbaaha bihi qalat man anbaaka hatha qala nabbaaniya alAAaleemu alkhabeeru

Wa 'Idh 'Asarra An-Nabīyu 'Ilá Ba`đi 'Azwājihi Ĥadīthāan Falammā Nabba'at Bihi Wa 'Ažharahu Allāhu `Alayhi `Arrafa Ba`đahu Wa 'A`rađa `An Ba`đin Falammā Nabba'ahā Bihi Qālat Man 'Anba'aka Hādhā Qāla Nabba'aniya Al-`Alīmu Al-Khabīru

The Prophet told a secret to one of his wives telling her not to mention it to anyone else. When she divulged it, God informed His Prophet about this. The Prophet told his wife part of the information which he had received from God and ignored the rest. Then she asked, "Who informed you about this?" He replied, "The All-aware and All-knowing one has told me

Ayah 4

In tatooba ila Allahi faqad saghat quloobukuma wain tathahara AAalayhi fainna Allaha huwa mawlahu wajibreelu wasalihu almumineena waalmalaikatu baAAda thalika thaheerun

In Tatūbā 'Ilá Allāhi Faqad Şaghat Qulūbukumā Wa 'In Tažāharā `Alayhi Fa'inna Allāha Huwa Mawlāhu Wa Jibrīlu Wa Şāliĥu Al-Mu'uminīna Wa Al-Malā'ikatu Ba`da Dhālika Žahīrun

Would that you two (wives of the Prophet) had turned to God in repentance. Your hearts have sinned. If you conspire with each other against him, know that God is his Guardian. Gabriel, the righteous (ones) among the believers and the angels will all support him

Ayah 5

AAasa rabbuhu in tallaqakunna an yubdilahu azwajan khayran minkunna muslimatin muminatin qanitatin taibatin AAabidatin saihatin thayyibatin waabkaran

Asá Rabbuhu 'In Ţallaqakunna 'An Yubdilahu 'Azwājāan Khayrāan Minkunna Muslimātin Mu'uminātin Qānitātin Tā'ibātin `Ābidātin Sā'iĥātin Thayyibātin Wa 'Abkārāan

If he divorces you, perhaps his Lord will replace you with better wives, either widows or virgins who will be Muslims: believers, faithful, obedient, repentant, and devout in prayer and fasting

Ayah 6

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo qoo anfusakum waahleekum naran waqooduha alnnasu waalhijaratu AAalayha malaikatun ghilathun shidadun la yaAAsoona Allaha ma amarahum wayafAAaloona ma yumaroona

Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Qū 'Anfusakum Wa 'Ahlīkum Nārāan Waqūduhā An-Nāsu Wa Al-Ĥijāratu `Alayhā Malā'ikatun Ghilāžun Shidādun Lā Ya`şūna Allāha Mā 'Amarahum Wa Yaf`alūna Mā Yu'umarūna

Believers, save yourselves and your families from the fire which is fueled by people and stones and is guarded by stern angels who do not disobey God's commands and do whatever they are ordered to do

Ayah 7

Ya ayyuha allatheena kafaroo la taAAtathiroo alyawma innama tujzawna ma kuntum taAAmaloona

Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Lā Ta`tadhirū Al-Yawma 'Innamā Tujzawna Mā Kuntum Ta`malūna

Disbelievers (will be told on the Day of Judgment), "Do not make any excuses on this day; you are only receiving recompense for what you have done

Ayah 8

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo tooboo ila Allahi tawbatan nasoohan AAasa rabbukum an yukaffira AAankum sayyiatikum wayudkhilakum jannatin tajree min tahtiha alanharu yawma la yukhzee Allahu alnnabiyya waallatheena amanoo maAAahu nooruhum yasAAa bayna aydeehim wabiaymanihim yaqooloona rabbana atmim lana noorana waighfir lana innaka AAala kulli shayin qadeerun

Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Tūbū 'Ilá Allāhi Tawbatan Naşūĥāan `Asá Rabbukum 'An Yukaffira `Ankum Sayyi'ātikum Wa Yudkhilakum Jannātin Tajrī Min Taĥtihā Al-'Anhāru Yawma Lā Yukhzī Allāhu An-Nabīya Wa Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Ma`ahu Nūruhum Yas`á Bayna 'Aydīhim Wa Bi'aymānihim Yaqūlūna Rabbanā 'Atmim Lanā Nūranā Wa Aghfir Lanā 'Innaka `Alá Kulli Shay'in Qadīrun

Believers, turn to God in repentance with the intention of never repeating the same sin. Perhaps your Lord will expiate your evil deeds and admit you to Paradise wherein streams flow. On the Day of Judgment, God will not disgrace the Prophet and those who have believed in him. Their lights will shine in front of them and to their right. They will say, "Our Lord, perfect our light for us and forgive our sins. You have power over all things

Ayah 9

Ya ayyuha alnnabiyyu jahidi alkuffara waalmunafiqeena waoghluth AAalayhim wamawahum jahannamu wabisa almaseeru

Yā 'Ayyuhā An-Nabīyu Jāhidi Al-Kuffāra Wa Al-Munāfiqīna Wa Aghluž `Alayhim Wa Ma'wāhum Jahannamu Wa Bi'sa Al-Maşīru

Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be stern against them. Their dwelling will be hell fire, the most terrible fate

Ayah 10

Daraba Allahu mathalan lillatheena kafaroo imraata noohin waimraata lootin kanata tahta AAabdayni min AAibadina salihayni fakhanatahuma falam yughniya AAanhuma mina Allahi shayan waqeela odkhula alnnara maAAa alddakhileena

Đaraba Allāhu Mathalāan Lilladhīna Kafarū Aimra'ata Nūĥin Wa Aimra'ata Lūţin Kānatā Taĥta `Abdayni Min `Ibādinā Şāliĥayni Fakhānatāhumā Falam Yughniyā `Anhumā Mina Allāhi Shay'āan Wa Qīla Adkhulā An-Nāra Ma`a Ad-Dākhilīna

God has told the disbelievers the story of the wives of Noah and Lot as a parable. They were married to two of Our righteous servants but were unfaithful to them. Nothing could protect them from the (wrath) of God and they were told to enter hell fire with the others

Ayah 11

Wadaraba Allahu mathalan lillatheena amanoo imraata firAAawna ith qalat rabbi ibni lee AAindaka baytan fee aljannati wanajjinee min firAAawna waAAamalihi wanajjinee mina alqawmi alththalimeena

Wa Đaraba Allāhu Mathalāan Lilladhīna 'Āmanū Aimra'ata Fir`awna 'Idh Qālat Rabbi Abni Lī `Indaka Baytāan Fī Al-Jannati Wa Najjinī Min Fir`awna Wa `Amalihi Wa Najjinī Mina Al-Qawmi Až-Žālimīna

To the believers, as a parable, God has told the story of the wife of the Pharaoh who said, "Lord, establish for me a house in Paradise in your presence. Rescue me from Pharaoh and his deeds and save me from the unjust people

Ayah 12

Wamaryama ibnata AAimrana allatee ahsanat farjaha fanafakhna feehi min roohina wasaddaqat bikalimati rabbiha wakutubihi wakanat mina alqaniteena

Wa Maryama Abnata `Imrāna Allatī 'Aĥşanat Farjahā Fanafakhnā Fīhi Min Rūĥinā Wa Şaddaqat Bikalimāti Rabbihā Wa Kutubihi Wa Kānat Mina Al-Qānitīna

He has also told, as a parable, the story of Mary, daughter of Imran who preserved her virginity and (into whose womb) We breathed Our spirit. She made the words of her Lord and the predictions in His Books come true. She was an obedient woman
