Noon waalqalami wama yasturoona
Nūn Wa Al-Qalami Wa Mā Yasţurūna
Nun. By the Pen and what they write
Surah 68
The Pen
سُورَةُ القَلَمِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Ayah 1
Noon waalqalami wama yasturoona
Nūn Wa Al-Qalami Wa Mā Yasţurūna
Nun. By the Pen and what they write
Ayah 2
Ma anta biniAAmati rabbika bimajnoonin
Mā 'Anta Bini`mati Rabbika Bimajnūnin
by your Lord’s blessing, you are not, crazy
Ayah 3
Wainna laka laajran ghayra mamnoonin
Wa 'Inna Laka La'ajrāan Ghayra Mamnūnin
and yours indeed will be an everlasting reward
Ayah 4
Wainnaka laAAala khuluqin AAatheemin
Wa 'Innaka La`alá Khuluqin `Ažīmin
and indeed you possess a great character
Ayah 5
Fasatubsiru wayubsiroona
Fasatubşiru Wa Yubşirūna
You will see and they will see
Ayah 6
Biayyikumu almaftoonu
Bi'ayyyikumu Al-Maftūnu
which one of you is crazy
Ayah 7
Inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamu biman dalla AAan sabeelihi wahuwa aAAlamu bialmuhtadeena
Inna Rabbaka Huwa 'A`lamu Biman Đalla `An Sabīlihi Wa Huwa 'A`lamu Bil-Muhtadīna
Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are guided
Ayah 8
Fala tutiAAi almukaththibeena
Falā Tuţi`i Al-Mukadhibīna
So do not obey the deniers
Ayah 9
Waddoo law tudhinu fayudhinoona
Wa Ddū Law Tud/hinu Fayud/hinūna
who are eager that you should be flexible, so that they [too] may be flexible [towards you]
Ayah 10
Wala tutiAA kulla hallafin maheenin
Wa Lā Tuţi` Kulla Ĥallāfin Mahīnin
And do not obey any vile swearer
Ayah 11
Hammazin mashshain binameemin
Hammāzin Mashā'in Binamīmin
scandal-monger, talebearer
Ayah 12
MannaAAin lilkhayri muAAtadin atheemin
Mannā`in Lilkhayri Mu`tadin 'Athīmin
hinderer of all good, sinful transgressor
Ayah 13
AAutullin baAAda thalika zaneemin
Utullin Ba`da Dhālika Zanīmin
callous and, on top of that, baseborn
Ayah 14
An kana tha malin wabaneena
An Kāna Dhā Mālin Wa Banīna
—[who behaves in such a manner only] because he has wealth and children
Ayah 15
Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatuna qala asateeru alawwaleena
Idhā Tutlá `Alayhi 'Āyātunā Qāla 'Asāţīru Al-'Awwalīna
When Our signs are recited to him, he says, ‘Myths of the ancients!’
Ayah 16
Sanasimuhu AAala alkhurtoomi
Sanasimuhu `Alá Al-Khurţūmi
Soon We shall brand him on his snout
Ayah 17
Inna balawnahum kama balawna ashaba aljannati ith aqsamoo layasrimunnaha musbiheena
Innā Balawnāhum Kamā Balawnā 'Aşĥāba Al-Jannati 'Idh 'Aqsamū Layaşrimunnahā Muşbiĥīna
Indeed we have tested them just as We tested the People of the Garden when they vowed they would gather its fruit at dawn
Ayah 18
Wala yastathnoona
Wa Lā Yastathnūna
and they did not make any exception
Ayah 19
Fatafa AAalayha taifun min rabbika wahum naimoona
Faţāfa `Alayhā Ţā'ifun Min Rabbika Wa Hum Nā'imūna
Then, a visitation from your Lord visited it while they were asleep
Ayah 20
Faasbahat kaalssareemi
Fa'aşbaĥat Kālşşarīmi
So, by dawn it was like a harvested field
Ayah 21
Fatanadaw musbiheena
Fatanādaw Muşbiĥīna
At dawn they called out to one another
Ayah 22
Ani ighdoo AAala harthikum in kuntum sarimeena
Ani Aghdū `Alá Ĥarthikum 'In Kuntum Şārimīna
‘Get off early to your field if you have to gather [the fruits].’
Ayah 23
Faintalaqoo wahum yatakhafatoona
Fānţalaqū Wa Hum Yatakhāfatūna
So off they went, murmuring to one another
Ayah 24
An la yadkhulannaha alyawma AAalaykum miskeenun
An Lā Yadkhulannahā Al-Yawma `Alaykum Miskīnun
‘Today no needy man shall come to you in it.’
Ayah 25
Waghadaw AAala hardin qadireena
Waghadaw `Alá Ĥardin Qādirīna
And they set out at early morning, [considering themselves] able to deprive [the poor of its fruit]
Ayah 26
Falamma raawha qaloo inna ladalloona
Falammā Ra'awhā Qālū 'Innā Lađāllūna
But when they saw it, they said, ‘We have indeed lost our way!’
Ayah 27
Bal nahnu mahroomoona
Bal Naĥnu Maĥrūmūna
‘No, it is we who have been deprived!’
Ayah 28
Qala awsatuhum alam aqul lakum lawla tusabbihoona
Qāla 'Awsaţuhum 'Alam 'Aqul Lakum Lawlā Tusabbiĥūna
The most upright among them said, ‘Did I not tell you, ‘‘Why do you not glorify [Allah]?’’ ’
Ayah 29
Qaloo subhana rabbina inna kunna thalimeena
Qālū Subĥāna Rabbinā 'Innā Kunnā Žālimīna
They said, ‘Immaculate is our Lord! We have indeed been wrongdoers!’
Ayah 30
Faaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatalawamoona
Fa'aqbala Ba`đuhum `Alá Ba`đin Yatalāwamūna
Then they turned to one another, blaming each other
Ayah 31
Qaloo ya waylana inna kunna tagheena
Qālū Yā Waylanā 'Innā Kunnā Ţāghīna
They said, ‘Woe to us! Indeed, we have been rebellious
Ayah 32
AAasa rabbuna an yubdilana khayran minha inna ila rabbina raghiboona
Asá Rabbunā 'An Yubdilanā Khayrāan Minhā 'Innā 'Ilá Rabbinā Rāghibūna
Maybe our Lord will give us a better one in its place. Indeed we earnestly beseech our Lord.’
Ayah 33
Kathalika alAAathabu walaAAathabu alakhirati akbaru law kanoo yaAAlamoona
Kadhālika Al-`Adhābu Wa La`adhābu Al-'Ākhirati 'Akbaru Law Kānū Ya`lamūna
Such was their punishment; and the punishment of the Hereafter is surely greater, had they known
Ayah 34
Inna lilmuttaqeena AAinda rabbihim jannati alnnaAAeemi
Inna Lilmuttaqīna `Inda Rabbihim Jannāti An-Na`īmi
Indeed for the Godwary there will be gardens of bliss near their Lord
Ayah 35
AfanajAAalu almuslimeena kaalmujrimeena
Afanaj`alu Al-Muslimīna Kālmujrimīna
Shall We treat those who submit [to Us] as [We treat] the guilty
Ayah 36
Ma lakum kayfa tahkumoona
Mā Lakum Kayfa Taĥkumūna
What is the matter with you? How do you judge
Ayah 37
Am lakum kitabun feehi tadrusoona
Am Lakum Kitābun Fīhi Tadrusūna
Do you possess a scripture in which you read
Ayah 38
Inna lakum feehi lama takhayyaroona
Inna Lakum Fīhi Lamā Takhayyarūna
that you shall have in it whatever you choose
Ayah 39
Am lakum aymanun AAalayna balighatun ila yawmi alqiyamati inna lakum lama tahkumoona
Am Lakum 'Aymānun `Alaynā Bālighatun 'Ilá Yawmi Al-Qiyāmati 'Inna Lakum Lamā Taĥkumūna
Do you have a pledge binding on Us until the Day of Resurrection, that you shall indeed have whatever you decide
Ayah 40
Salhum ayyuhum bithalika zaAAeemun
Salhum 'Ayyuhum Bidhālika Za`īmun
Ask them, which of them will aver [any of] that
Ayah 41
Am lahum shurakao falyatoo bishurakaihim in kanoo sadiqeena
Am Lahum Shurakā'u Falya'tū Bishurakā'ihim 'In Kānū Şādiqīna
Do they have any ‘partners’ [that they claim for Allah]? Then let them produce their partners, if they are truthful
Ayah 42
Yawma yukshafu AAan saqin wayudAAawna ila alssujoodi fala yastateeAAoona
Yawma Yukshafu `An Sāqin Wa Yud`awna 'Ilá As-Sujūdi Falā Yastaţī`ūna
The day when the catastrophe occurs and they are summoned to prostrate themselves, they will not be able [to do it]
Ayah 43
KhashiAAatan absaruhum tarhaquhum thillatun waqad kanoo yudAAawna ila alssujoodi wahum salimoona
Khāshi`atan 'Abşāruhum Tarhaquhum Dhillatun Wa Qad Kānū Yud`awna 'Ilá As-Sujūdi Wa Hum Sālimūna
With a humbled look [in their eyes], they will be overcast by abasement. Certainly, they were summoned to prostrate themselves while they were yet sound
Ayah 44
Fatharnee waman yukaththibu bihatha alhadeethi sanastadrijuhum min haythu la yaAAlamoona
Fadharnī Wa Man Yukadhibu Bihadhā Al-Ĥadīthi Sanastadrijuhum Min Ĥaythu Lā Ya`lamūna
So leave Me with those who deny this discourse. We will draw them imperceptibly [into ruin], whence they do not know
Ayah 45
Waomlee lahum inna kaydee mateenun
Wa 'Umlī Lahum 'Inna Kaydī Matīnun
I will grant them respite, for My devising is indeed sure
Ayah 46
Am tasaluhum ajran fahum min maghramin muthqaloona
Am Tas'aluhum 'Ajrāan Fahum Min Maghramin Muthqalūna
Do you ask them for a reward, so that they are weighed down with debt
Ayah 47
Am AAindahumu alghaybu fahum yaktuboona
Am `Indahumu Al-Ghaybu Fahum Yaktubūna
Do they possess [access to] the Unseen, so that they write it down
Ayah 48
Faisbir lihukmi rabbika wala takun kasahibi alhooti ith nada wahuwa makthoomun
Fāşbir Liĥukmi Rabbika Wa Lā Takun Kaşāĥibi Al-Ĥūti 'Idh Nādá Wa Huwa Makžūmun
So submit patiently to the judgement of your Lord, and do not be like the Man of the Fish who called out as he choked with grief
Ayah 49
Lawla an tadarakahu niAAmatun min rabbihi lanubitha bialAAarai wahuwa mathmoomun
Lawlā 'An Tadārakahu Ni`matun Min Rabbihi Lanubidha Bil-`Arā'i Wa Huwa Madhmūmun
Had it not been for a blessing that came to his rescue from his Lord, he would surely have been cast on the bare shore, being blameworthy
Ayah 50
Faijtabahu rabbuhu fajaAAalahu mina alssaliheena
Fājtabāhu Rabbuhu Faja`alahu Mina Aş-Şāliĥīna
So his Lord chose him and made him one of the righteous
Ayah 51
Wain yakadu allatheena kafaroo layuzliqoonaka biabsarihim lamma samiAAoo alththikra wayaqooloona innahu lamajnoonun
Wa 'In Yakādu Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Layuzliqūnaka Bi'abşārihim Lammā Sami`ū Adh-Dhikra Wa Yaqūlūna 'Innahu Lamajnūnun
Indeed the faithless almost devour you with their eyes when they hear this Reminder, and they say, ‘He is indeed crazy.’
Ayah 52
Wama huwa illa thikrun lilAAalameena
Wa Mā Huwa 'Illā Dhikrun Lil`ālamīna
Yet it is just a reminder for all the nations
