Surah 68

Al-Qalam

The Pen

سُورَةُ القَلَمِ

Meccan 52 Verses

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1

Ayah 1

Noon waalqalami wama yasturoona

Nūn Wa Al-Qalami Wa Mā Yasţurūna

Nun. By the pen and by what you write

2

Ayah 2

Ma anta biniAAmati rabbika bimajnoonin

Mā 'Anta Bini`mati Rabbika Bimajnūnin

(Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord

3

Ayah 3

Wainna laka laajran ghayra mamnoonin

Wa 'Inna Laka La'ajrāan Ghayra Mamnūnin

You will certainly receive a never-ending reward

4

Ayah 4

Wainnaka laAAala khuluqin AAatheemin

Wa 'Innaka La`alá Khuluqin `Ažīmin

You have attained a high moral standard

5

Ayah 5

Fasatubsiru wayubsiroona

Fasatubşiru Wa Yubşirūna

You will see and they will also see

6

Ayah 6

Biayyikumu almaftoonu

Bi'ayyyikumu Al-Maftūnu

which of you has been afflicted by insanity

7

Ayah 7

Inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamu biman dalla AAan sabeelihi wahuwa aAAlamu bialmuhtadeena

Inna Rabbaka Huwa 'A`lamu Biman Đalla `An Sabīlihi Wa Huwa 'A`lamu Bil-Muhtadīna

Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path and who is rightly guided

Ayah 8

Fala tutiAAi almukaththibeena

Falā Tuţi`i Al-Mukadhibīna

Do not yield to those who reject the Truth

9

Ayah 9

Waddoo law tudhinu fayudhinoona

Wa Ddū Law Tud/hinu Fayud/hinūna

They would like you to relent to them so that they could also relent towards you

10

Ayah 10

Wala tutiAA kulla hallafin maheenin

Wa Lā Tuţi` Kulla Ĥallāfin Mahīnin

Do not yield to one persistent in swearing

11

Ayah 11

Hammazin mashshain binameemin

Hammāzin Mashā'in Binamīmin

back-biting, gossiping

12

Ayah 12

MannaAAin lilkhayri muAAtadin atheemin

Mannā`in Lilkhayri Mu`tadin 'Athīmin

obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor

13

Ayah 13

AAutullin baAAda thalika zaneemin

Utullin Ba`da Dhālika Zanīmin

ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt or that because he may possess wealth and children

14

Ayah 14

An kana tha malin wabaneena

An Kāna Dhā Mālin Wa Banīna

When Our revelations are recited to him

15

Ayah 15

Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatuna qala asateeru alawwaleena

Idhā Tutlá `Alayhi 'Āyātunā Qāla 'Asāţīru Al-'Awwalīna

he says, "These are ancient legends

16

Ayah 16

Sanasimuhu AAala alkhurtoomi

Sanasimuhu `Alá Al-Khurţūmi

We shall brand him on his nose

17

Ayah 17

Inna balawnahum kama balawna ashaba aljannati ith aqsamoo layasrimunnaha musbiheena

Innā Balawnāhum Kamā Balawnā 'Aşĥāba Al-Jannati 'Idh 'Aqsamū Layaşrimunnahā Muşbiĥīna

We have tested them in the same way as we tested the dwellers of the garden (in Yemen) when they swore to pluck all the fruits of the garden in the morning

Ayah 18

Wala yastathnoona

Wa Lā Yastathnūna

without adding ("if God wills)

19

Ayah 19

Fatafa AAalayha taifun min rabbika wahum naimoona

Faţāfa `Alayhā Ţā'ifun Min Rabbika Wa Hum Nā'imūna

A visitor from your Lord circled around the garden during the night while they were asleep

20

Ayah 20

Faasbahat kaalssareemi

Fa'aşbaĥat Kālşşarīmi

and the garden was turned into a barren desert

21

Ayah 21

Fatanadaw musbiheena

Fatanādaw Muşbiĥīna

In the morning they called out to one another

22

Ayah 22

Ani ighdoo AAala harthikum in kuntum sarimeena

Ani Aghdū `Alá Ĥarthikum 'In Kuntum Şārimīna

Go early to your farms, if you want to pluck the fruits

23

Ayah 23

Faintalaqoo wahum yatakhafatoona

Fānţalaqū Wa Hum Yatakhāfatūna

They all left, whispering to one another

24

Ayah 24

An la yadkhulannaha alyawma AAalaykum miskeenun

An Lā Yadkhulannahā Al-Yawma `Alaykum Miskīnun

Let no beggar come to the garden

25

Ayah 25

Waghadaw AAala hardin qadireena

Waghadaw `Alá Ĥardin Qādirīna

They were resolved to repel the beggars

26

Ayah 26

Falamma raawha qaloo inna ladalloona

Falammā Ra'awhā Qālū 'Innā Lađāllūna

When they saw the garden, they said, "Surely we have lost our way

27

Ayah 27

Bal nahnu mahroomoona

Bal Naĥnu Maĥrūmūna

(No, we are not lost.) In fact, we have been deprived of everything

28

Ayah 28

Qala awsatuhum alam aqul lakum lawla tusabbihoona

Qāla 'Awsaţuhum 'Alam 'Aqul Lakum Lawlā Tusabbiĥūna

A reasonable one among them said, "Did I not tell you that you should glorify God

29

Ayah 29

Qaloo subhana rabbina inna kunna thalimeena

Qālū Subĥāna Rabbinā 'Innā Kunnā Žālimīna

They said, "All glory belongs to God. We have certainly been unjust

30

Ayah 30

Faaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatalawamoona

Fa'aqbala Ba`đuhum `Alá Ba`đin Yatalāwamūna

Some of them started to blame others

31

Ayah 31

Qaloo ya waylana inna kunna tagheena

Qālū Yā Waylanā 'Innā Kunnā Ţāghīna

They said, "Woe to us. We have been arrogant

32

Ayah 32

AAasa rabbuna an yubdilana khayran minha inna ila rabbina raghiboona

Asá Rabbunā 'An Yubdilanā Khayrāan Minhā 'Innā 'Ilá Rabbinā Rāghibūna

Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord

33

Ayah 33

Kathalika alAAathabu walaAAathabu alakhirati akbaru law kanoo yaAAlamoona

Kadhālika Al-`Adhābu Wa La`adhābu Al-'Ākhirati 'Akbaru Law Kānū Ya`lamūna

Such is the torment if only they knew that the torment in the life hereafter will certainly be greater

Ayah 34

Inna lilmuttaqeena AAinda rabbihim jannati alnnaAAeemi

Inna Lilmuttaqīna `Inda Rabbihim Jannāti An-Na`īmi

The pious ones will receive a beautiful Paradise from their Lord

35

Ayah 35

AfanajAAalu almuslimeena kaalmujrimeena

Afanaj`alu Al-Muslimīna Kālmujrimīna

Shall We treat the Muslims like criminals

36

Ayah 36

Ma lakum kayfa tahkumoona

Mā Lakum Kayfa Taĥkumūna

What is the matter with you? How could you judge this to be so

37

Ayah 37

Am lakum kitabun feehi tadrusoona

Am Lakum Kitābun Fīhi Tadrusūna

Do you have a book from which you study

38

Ayah 38

Inna lakum feehi lama takhayyaroona

Inna Lakum Fīhi Lamā Takhayyarūna

that tells you to do whatever you want

39

Ayah 39

Am lakum aymanun AAalayna balighatun ila yawmi alqiyamati inna lakum lama tahkumoona

Am Lakum 'Aymānun `Alaynā Bālighatun 'Ilá Yawmi Al-Qiyāmati 'Inna Lakum Lamā Taĥkumūna

Do you have a covenant with Us which allows you to do whatever you want until the Day of Judgment

40

Ayah 40

Salhum ayyuhum bithalika zaAAeemun

Salhum 'Ayyuhum Bidhālika Za`īmun

(Muhammad), ask which of them can guarantee that on the Day of Judgment

41

Ayah 41

Am lahum shurakao falyatoo bishurakaihim in kanoo sadiqeena

Am Lahum Shurakā'u Falya'tū Bishurakā'ihim 'In Kānū Şādiqīna

they will receive the same thing that the Muslims will? Do they have any witness to such an agreement? Let them bring out such witness, if they are truthful

42

Ayah 42

Yawma yukshafu AAan saqin wayudAAawna ila alssujoodi fala yastateeAAoona

Yawma Yukshafu `An Sāqin Wa Yud`awna 'Ilá As-Sujūdi Falā Yastaţī`ūna

On the day when the terrible torment approaches, they will be told (in a mocking way) to prostrate themselves, but they will not be able to do it

43

Ayah 43

KhashiAAatan absaruhum tarhaquhum thillatun waqad kanoo yudAAawna ila alssujoodi wahum salimoona

Khāshi`atan 'Abşāruhum Tarhaquhum Dhillatun Wa Qad Kānū Yud`awna 'Ilá As-Sujūdi Wa Hum Sālimūna

Their eyes will be lowered and disgrace will cover them. They had certainly been told to prostrate themselves before God when they were safe and sound

Ayah 44

Fatharnee waman yukaththibu bihatha alhadeethi sanastadrijuhum min haythu la yaAAlamoona

Fadharnī Wa Man Yukadhibu Bihadhā Al-Ĥadīthi Sanastadrijuhum Min Ĥaythu Lā Ya`lamūna

Leave those who reject the Quran to Me and I shall lead them step by step to destruction, without their being aware of it

45

Ayah 45

Waomlee lahum inna kaydee mateenun

Wa 'Umlī Lahum 'Inna Kaydī Matīnun

I shall give them respite, however, My plan is so strong that they will never be able to escape from it

46

Ayah 46

Am tasaluhum ajran fahum min maghramin muthqaloona

Am Tas'aluhum 'Ajrāan Fahum Min Maghramin Muthqalūna

(Muhammad), do you ask for your preaching any recompense which is too heavy a price for them to pay

47

Ayah 47

Am AAindahumu alghaybu fahum yaktuboona

Am `Indahumu Al-Ghaybu Fahum Yaktubūna

Do they possess the knowledge of the unseen which confirms the truthfulness of their belief

48

Ayah 48

Faisbir lihukmi rabbika wala takun kasahibi alhooti ith nada wahuwa makthoomun

Fāşbir Liĥukmi Rabbika Wa Lā Takun Kaşāĥibi Al-Ĥūti 'Idh Nādá Wa Huwa Makžūmun

Exercise patience until the promise of your Lord (to punish the unbelievers) comes true. Do not be like Jonah (who left his people without the permission of God; he wanted them to be punished immediately)

49

Ayah 49

Lawla an tadarakahu niAAmatun min rabbihi lanubitha bialAAarai wahuwa mathmoomun

Lawlā 'An Tadārakahu Ni`matun Min Rabbihi Lanubidha Bil-`Arā'i Wa Huwa Madhmūmun

and who cried (for help) to his Lord, while imprisoned and helpless inside the fish. Had it not been for a favor from his Lord, he would have been left out in the open, deserving blame for his shortcomings

50

Ayah 50

Faijtabahu rabbuhu fajaAAalahu mina alssaliheena

Fājtabāhu Rabbuhu Faja`alahu Mina Aş-Şāliĥīna

But his Lord chose him as His Prophet and made him one of the righteous ones

51

Ayah 51

Wain yakadu allatheena kafaroo layuzliqoonaka biabsarihim lamma samiAAoo alththikra wayaqooloona innahu lamajnoonun

Wa 'In Yakādu Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Layuzliqūnaka Bi'abşārihim Lammā Sami`ū Adh-Dhikra Wa Yaqūlūna 'Innahu Lamajnūnun

When the disbelievers listen to you reciting the Quran they almost try to destroy you with their piercing eyes. Then they say, "He is certainly insane

52

Ayah 52

Wama huwa illa thikrun lilAAalameena

Wa Mā Huwa 'Illā Dhikrun Lil`ālamīna

The Quran is nothing but a reminder from God to mankind
