Ayah 1
Saala sailun biAAathabin waqiAAin
Sa'ala Sā'ilun Bi`adhābin Wāqi`in
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God)
Surah 70
The Ascending Stairways
سُورَةُ المَعَارِجِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Ayah 1
Saala sailun biAAathabin waqiAAin
Sa'ala Sā'ilun Bi`adhābin Wāqi`in
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God)
Ayah 2
Lilkafireena laysa lahu dafiAAun
Lilkāfiryna Laysa Lahu Dāfi`un
which will inevitably seize the disbelievers
Ayah 3
Mina Allahi thee almaAAariji
Mina Allāhi Dhī Al-Ma`āriji
No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions
Ayah 4
TaAAruju almalaikatu waalrroohu ilayhi fee yawmin kana miqdaruhu khamseena alfa sanatin
Ta`ruju Al-Malā'ikatu Wa Ar-Rūĥu 'Ilayhi Fī Yawmin Kāna Miqdāruhu Khamsīna 'Alfa Sanahin
On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him
Ayah 5
Faisbir sabran jameelan
Fāşbir Şabrāan Jamīlāan
(Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints
Ayah 6
Innahum yarawnahu baAAeedan
Innahum Yarawnahu Ba`īdāan
They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away
Ayah 7
Wanarahu qareeban
Wa Narāhu Qarībāan
but We see it to be very near
Ayah 8
Yawma takoonu alssamao kaalmuhli
Yawma Takūnu As-Samā'u Kālmuhli
On the day when the heavens become like molten metal
Ayah 9
Watakoonu aljibalu kaalAAihni
Wa Takūnu Al-Jibālu Kāl`ihni
and the mountains become like wool
Ayah 10
Wala yasalu hameemun hameeman
Wa Lā Yas'alu Ĥamīmun Ĥamīmāan
even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends
Ayah 11
Yubassaroonahum yawaddu almujrimu law yaftadee min AAathabi yawmiithin bibaneehi
Yubaşşarūnahum Yawaddu Al-Mujrimu Law Yaftadī Min `Adhābi Yawmi'idhin Bibanīhi
though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children
Ayah 12
Wasahibatihi waakheehi
Wa Şāĥibatihi Wa 'Akhīhi
his wife, his brother
Ayah 13
Wafaseelatihi allatee tuweehi
Wa Faşīlatihi Allatī Tu'uwyhi
his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship)
Ayah 14
Waman fee alardi jameeAAan thumma yunjeehi
Wa Man Fī Al-'Arđi Jamī`āan Thumma Yunjīhi
and all those on earth
Ayah 15
Kalla innaha latha
Kallā 'Innahā Lažá
By no means! For the raging flames of the fire
Ayah 16
NazzaAAatan lilshshawa
Nazzā`atan Lilshawá
will strip-off the flesh
Ayah 17
TadAAoo man adbara watawalla
Tad`ū Man 'Adbara Wa Tawallá
and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God)
Ayah 18
WajamaAAa faawAAa
Wa Jama`a Fa'aw`á
and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose
Ayah 19
Inna alinsana khuliqa halooAAan
Inna Al-'Insāna Khuliqa Halū`āan
Human beings are created greedy
Ayah 20
Itha massahu alshsharru jazooAAan
Idhā Massahu Ash-Sharru Jazū`āan
When they are afflicted, they complain
Ayah 21
Waitha massahu alkhayru manooAAan
Wa 'Idhā Massahu Al-Khayru Manū`āan
but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly
Ayah 22
Illa almusalleena
Illā Al-Muşallīna
except those who are steadfast
Ayah 23
Allatheena hum AAala salatihim daimoona
Al-Ladhīna Hum `Alá Şalātihim Dā'imūna
and constant in their prayers
Ayah 24
Waallatheena fee amwalihim haqqun maAAloomun
Wa Al-Ladhīna Fī 'Amwālihim Ĥaqqun Ma`lūmun
They are those who assign a certain share of their property
Ayah 25
Lilssaili waalmahroomi
Lilssā'ili Wa Al-Maĥrūmi
for the needy and the deprived
Ayah 26
Waallatheena yusaddiqoona biyawmi alddeeni
Wa Al-Ladhīna Yuşaddiqūna Biyawmi Ad-Dīni
who acknowledge the Day of Judgment
Ayah 27
Waallatheena hum min AAathabi rabbihim mushfiqoona
Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum Min `Adhābi Rabbihim Mushfiqūna
who are afraid of the torment of their Lord
Ayah 28
Inna AAathaba rabbihim ghayru mamoonin
Inna `Adhāba Rabbihim Ghayru Ma'mūnin
the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of
Ayah 29
Waallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoona
Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum Lifurūjihim Ĥāfižūna
who guard their carnal desires
Ayah 30
Illa AAala azwajihim aw ma malakat aymanuhum fainnahum ghayru maloomeena
Illā `Alá 'Azwājihim 'Aw Mā Malakat 'Aymānuhum Fa'innahum Ghayru Malūmīna
except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed
Ayah 31
Famani ibtagha waraa thalika faolaika humu alAAadoona
Famani Abtaghá Warā'a Dhālika Fa'ūlā'ika Humu Al-`Ādūna
but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor
Ayah 32
Waallatheena hum liamanatihim waAAahdihim raAAoona
Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum Li'mānātihim Wa `Ahdihim Rā`ūna
who honor their trust and promises
Ayah 33
Waallatheena hum bishahadatihim qaimoona
Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum Bishahādātihim Qā'imūna
who testify to what they have witnessed
Ayah 34
Waallatheena hum AAala salatihim yuhafithoona
Wa Al-Ladhīna Hum `Alá Şalātihim Yuĥāfižūna
and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times
Ayah 35
Olaika fee jannatin mukramoona
Ūlā'ika Fī Jannātin Mukramūna
such people will receive due honor in Paradise
Ayah 36
Famali allatheena kafaroo qibalaka muhtiAAeena
Famāli Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Qibalaka Muhţi`īna
What is wrong with the disbelievers who roam around you (Muhammad)
Ayah 37
AAani alyameeni waAAani alshshimali AAizeena
Ani Al-Yamīni Wa `Ani Ash-Shimāli `Izīna
left and right, in numerous groups
Ayah 38
AyatmaAAu kullu imriin minhum an yudkhala jannata naAAeemin
Ayaţma`u Kullu Amri'in Minhum 'An Yudkhala Jannata Na`īmin
Does every one of them desire to enter the bountiful Paradise
Ayah 39
Kalla inna khalaqnahum mimma yaAAlamoona
Kallā 'Innā Khalaqnāhum Mimmā Ya`lamūna
By no means! For they know very well out of what We have created them (The human being's naturally growing from a living germ, without discipline and good deeds will not result in virtue)
Ayah 40
Fala oqsimu birabbi almashariqi waalmagharibi inna laqadiroona
Falā 'Uqsimu Birabbi Al-Mashāriqi Wa Al-Maghāribi 'Innā Laqādirūna
I do not need to swear by the Lord of the eastern and western regions that We have certainly all the power
Ayah 41
AAala an nubaddila khayran minhum wama nahnu bimasbooqeena
Alá 'An Nubaddila Khayrāan Minhum Wa Mā Naĥnu Bimasbūqīna
to replace them by a better people and none can challenge Our power
Ayah 42
Fatharhum yakhoodoo wayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allathee yooAAadoona
Fadharhum Yakhūđū Wa Yal`abū Ĥattá Yulāqū Yawmahumu Al-Ladhī Yū`adūna
(Muhammad), leave them alone to dispute and play until they face the Day with which they have been threatened
Ayah 43
Yawma yakhrujoona mina alajdathi siraAAan kaannahum ila nusubin yoofidoona
Yawma Yakhrujūna Mina Al-'Ajdāthi Sirā`āan Ka'annahum 'Ilá Nuşubin Yūfiđūna
the Day when they rush out of their graves as if racing towards a signpost
Ayah 44
KhashiAAatan absaruhum tarhaquhum thillatun thalika alyawmu allathee kanoo yooAAadoona
Khāshi`atan 'Abşāruhum Tarhaquhum Dhillatun Dhālika Al-Yawmu Al-Ladhī Kānū Yū`adūna
with their eyes cast down and covered by disgrace; the day about which they were promised
