Surah 74

Al-Muddaththir

The Cloaked One

سُورَةُ المُدَّثِّرِ

Meccan 56 Verses

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1

Ayah 1

Ya ayyuha almuddaththiru

Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Muddaththiru

Cloaked one

2

Ayah 2

Qum faanthir

Qum Fa'andhir

stand up, deliver your warning

3

Ayah 3

Warabbaka fakabbir

Wa Rabbaka Fakabbir

proclaim the greatness of your Lord

4

Ayah 4

Wathiyabaka fatahhir

Wa Thiyābaka Faţahhir

cleanse your clothes

5

Ayah 5

Waalrrujza faohjur

Wa Ar-Rujza Fāhjur

stay away from sins

6

Ayah 6

Wala tamnun tastakthiru

Wa Lā Tamnun Tastakthiru

and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God

7

Ayah 7

Walirabbika faisbir

Wa Lirabbika Fāşbir

Exercise patience to please your Lord

8

Ayah 8

Faitha nuqira fee alnnaqoori

Fa'idhā Nuqira Fī An-Nāqūri

When the trumpet is sounded

9

Ayah 9

Fathalika yawmaithin yawmun AAaseerun

Fadhālika Yawma'idhin Yawmun `Asīrun

it will be a hard day

10

Ayah 10

AAala alkafireena ghayru yaseerin

Alá Al-Kāfirīna Ghayru Yasīrin

and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy

11

Ayah 11

Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan

Dharnī Wa Man Khalaqtu Waĥīdāan

Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself

12

Ayah 12

WajaAAaltu lahu malan mamdoodan

Wa Ja`altu Lahu Mālāan Mamdūdāan

and whom I have granted abundant wealth

13

Ayah 13

Wabaneena shuhoodan

Wa Banīna Shuhūdāan

and children living in his presence

14

Ayah 14

Wamahhadtu lahu tamheedan

Wa Mahhadtu Lahu Tamhīdāan

whose life I have made run smoothly

15

Ayah 15

Thumma yatmaAAu an azeeda

Thumma Yaţma`u 'An 'Azīda

and who still desires more

16

Ayah 16

Kalla innahu kana liayatina AAaneedan

Kallā 'Innahu Kāna Li'yātinā `Anīdāan

Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations

17

Ayah 17

Saorhiquhu saAAoodan

Sa'urhiquhu Şa`ūdāan

We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief

18

Ayah 18

Innahu fakkara waqaddara

Innahu Fakkara Wa Qaddara

He planned and plotted

19

Ayah 19

Faqutila kayfa qaddara

Faqutila Kayfa Qaddara

May he be condemned

20

Ayah 20

Thumma qutila kayfa qaddara

Thumma Qutila Kayfa Qaddara

What an evil plan he has made

21

Ayah 21

Thumma nathara

Thumma Nažara

May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around

22

Ayah 22

Thumma AAabasa wabasara

Thumma `Abasa Wa Basara

frowned and scowled

23

Ayah 23

Thumma adbara waistakbara

Thumma 'Adbara Wa Astakbara

then turned back, and swelling-up with pride

24

Ayah 24

Faqala in hatha illa sihrun yutharu

Faqāla 'In Hādhā 'Illā Siĥrun Yu'utharu

said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians

25

Ayah 25

In hatha illa qawlu albashari

In Hādhā 'Illā Qawlu Al-Bashari

These are only words from a mere mortal

Ayah 26

Saosleehi saqara

Sa'uşlīhi Saqara

I shall make him suffer the torment of hell

27

Ayah 27

Wama adraka ma saqaru

Wa Mā 'Adrāka Mā Saqaru

Would that you really knew what hell is

28

Ayah 28

La tubqee wala tatharu

Lā Tubqī Wa Lā Tadharu

It leaves and spares no one and nothing

29

Ayah 29

Lawwahatun lilbashari

Lawwāĥatun Lilbashari

It scorches people's skin

30

Ayah 30

AAalayha tisAAata AAashara

Alayhā Tis`ata `Ashara

and it has nineteen angelic keepers

31

Ayah 31

Wama jaAAalna ashaba alnnari illa malaikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmuminoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari

Wa Mā Ja`alnā 'Aşĥāba An-Nāri 'Illā Malā'ikatan Wa Mā Ja`alnā `Iddatahum 'Illā Fitnatan Lilladhīna Kafarū Liyastayqina Al-Ladhīna 'Ūtū Al-Kitāba Wa Yazdāda Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū 'Īmānāan Wa Lā Yartāba Al-Ladhīna 'Ūtū Al-Kitāba Wa Al-Mu'uminūna Wa Liyaqūla Al-Ladhīna Fī Qulūbihim Marađun Wa Al-Kāfirūna Mādhā 'Arāda Allāhu Bihadhā Mathalāan Kadhālika Yuđillu Allāhu Man Yashā'u Wa Yahdī Man Yashā'u Wa Mā Ya`lamu Junūda Rabbika 'Illā Huwa Wa Mā Hiya 'Illā Dhikrá Lilbashari

We have made only angels as the keepers of the fire (for they are the strongest in carrying out Our commands). Our informing (people) of the numbers of these angels is a trial for the disbelievers. It gives more certainty to the people of the Book and strengthens the faith of the believers. The people of the Book and the believers have no doubt about it. We have fixed the number to make the disbelievers and those whose hearts are sick say, "What does God mean by such a parable?" Thus, God guides and causes to go astray whomever He wants. No one knows about the army of your Lord except He Himself. This parable is a reminder for mankind

Kalla waalqamari

Kallā Wa Al-Qamari

By the moon

33

Ayah 33

Waallayli ith adbara

Wa Al-Layli 'Idh 'Adbara

by the retreating night

34

Ayah 34

Waalssubhi itha asfara

Wa Aş-Şubĥi 'Idhā 'Asfara

by the brightening dawn

35

Ayah 35

Innaha laihda alkubari

Innahā La'iĥdá Al-Kubari

hell is certainly the greatest calamity

36

Ayah 36

Natheeran lilbashari

Nadhīrāan Lilbashari

It is a warning for mankind

37

Ayah 37

Liman shaa minkum an yataqaddama aw yataakhkhara

Liman Shā'a Minkum 'An Yataqaddama 'Aw Yata'akhkhara

whether one steps forward to embrace the faith or one turns away from it

38

Ayah 38

Kullu nafsin bima kasabat raheenatun

Kullu Nafsin Bimā Kasabat Rahīnahun

Every soul will be in captivity for its deeds

39

Ayah 39

Illa ashaba alyameeni

Illā 'Aşĥāba Al-Yamīni

except the people of the right hand

40

Ayah 40

Fee jannatin yatasaaloona

Fī Jannātin Yatasā'alūna

who will be in Paradise

41

Ayah 41

AAani almujrimeena

Ani Al-Mujrimīna

and will ask of the criminals

42

Ayah 42

Ma salakakum fee saqara

Mā Salakakum Fī Saqara

what led you into hell

43

Ayah 43

Qaloo lam naku mina almusalleena

Qālū Lam Naku Mina Al-Muşallīna

They will reply, "We did not pray

44

Ayah 44

Walam naku nutAAimu almiskeena

Wa Lam Naku Nuţ`imu Al-Miskīna

nor did we feed the destitute

45

Ayah 45

Wakunna nakhoodu maAAa alkhaideena

Wa Kunnā Nakhūđu Ma`a Al-Khā'iđīna

We indulged and persisted in useless disputes

46

Ayah 46

Wakunna nukaththibu biyawmi alddeeni

Wa Kunnā Nukadhibu Biyawmi Ad-Dīni

and rejected the Day of Judgment

47

Ayah 47

Hatta atana alyaqeenu

Ĥattá 'Atānā Al-Yaqīnu

until death approached us

48

Ayah 48

Fama tanfaAAuhum shafaAAatu alshshafiAAeena

Famā Tanfa`uhum Shafā`atu Ash-Shāfi`īna

The intercession of the intercessors will be of no benefit to them

49

Ayah 49

Fama lahum AAani alttathkirati muAArideena

Famā Lahum `Ani At-Tadhkirati Mu`riđīna

If such will be the Day of Judgment, what is the matter with them? Why do they run away from guidance

50

Ayah 50

Kaannahum humurun mustanfiratun

Ka'annahum Ĥumurun Mustanfirahun

like frightened donkeys

51

Ayah 51

Farrat min qaswaratin

Farrat Min Qaswarahin

running away from a lion

52

Ayah 52

Bal yureedu kullu imriin minhum an yuta suhufan munashsharatan

Bal Yurīdu Kullu Amri'in Minhum 'An Yu'utá Şuĥufāan Munasharahan

Is it that everyone of them wants to receive a heavenly book addressed to him personally

Ayah 53

Kalla bal la yakhafoona alakhirata

Kallā Bal Lā Yakhāfūna Al-'Ākhiraha

This will certainly never be the case! In fact, they are not afraid of the Day of Judgment

Ayah 54

Kalla innahu tathkiratun

Kallā 'Innahu Tadhkirahun

There is no doubt that the Quran is a guide

55

Ayah 55

Faman shaa thakarahu

Faman Shā'a Dhakarahu

Let anyone who seeks guidance do so

56

Ayah 56

Wama yathkuroona illa an yashaa Allahu huwa ahlu alttaqwa waahlu almaghfirati

Wa Mā Yadhkurūna 'Illā 'An Yashā'a Allāhu Huwa 'Ahlu At-Taqwá Wa 'Ahlu Al-Maghfirahi

No one will seek guidance unless God wills it. He alone is worthy of being feared and He is the Source of Forgiveness
