Wa Al-Fajri
By the dawn
Surah 89
The Dawn
سُورَةُ الفَجۡرِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Ayah 1
Waalfajri
Wa Al-Fajri
By the dawn
Ayah 2
Walayalin AAashrin
Wa Layālin `Ashrin
by the Ten (secret) Nights
Ayah 3
WaalshshafAAi waalwatri
Wa Ash-Shaf`i Wa Al-Watri
by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj)
Ayah 4
Waallayli itha yasri
Wa Al-Layli 'Idhā Yasri
and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality)
Ayah 5
Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin
Hal Fī Dhālika Qasamun Lidhī Ĥijrin
Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people
Ayah 6
Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAadin
Alam Tara Kayfa Fa`ala Rabbuka Bi`ādin
(Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad
Ayah 7
Irama thati alAAimadi
Irama Dhāti Al-`Imādi
the people of the huge columned city of Eram
Ayah 8
Allatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albiladi
Allatī Lam Yukhlaq Mithluhā Fī Al-Bilādi
whose like has never been created in any other land
Ayah 9
Wathamooda allatheena jaboo alssakhra bialwadi
Wa Thamūda Al-Ladhīna Jābū Aş-Şakhra Bil-Wādi
(Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley
Ayah 10
WafirAAawna thee alawtadi
Wa Fir`awna Dhī Al-'Awtādi
(Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake
Ayah 11
Allatheena taghaw fee albiladi
Al-Ladhīna Ţaghaw Fī Al-Bilādi
led rebellious lives
Ayah 12
Faaktharoo feeha alfasada
Fa'aktharū Fīhā Al-Fasāda
and spread much corruption in the land
Ayah 13
Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin
Faşabba `Alayhim Rabbuka Sawţa `Adhābin
Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment
Ayah 14
Inna rabbaka labialmirsadi
Inna Rabbaka Labiālmirşādi
your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people)
Ayah 15
Faamma alinsanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani
Fa'ammā Al-'Insānu 'Idhā Mā Abtalāhu Rabbuhu Fa'akramahu Wa Na``amahu Fayaqūlu Rabbī 'Akramani
As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me
Ayah 16
Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani
Wa 'Ammā 'Idhā Mā Abtalāhu Faqadara `Alayhi Rizqahu Fayaqūlu Rabbī 'Ahānani
However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me
Ayah 17
Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema
Kallā Bal Lā Tukrimūna Al-Yatīma
(Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans
Ayah 18
Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni
Wa Lā Taĥāđđūna `Alá Ţa`āmi Al-Miskīni
or urge one another to feed the destitute
Ayah 19
Watakuloona altturatha aklan lamman
Wa Ta'kulūna At-Turātha 'Aklāan Lammāan
Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately
Ayah 20
Watuhibboona almala hubban jamman
Wa Tuĥibbūna Al-Māla Ĥubbāan Jammāan
and why do you have an excessive love of riches
Ayah 21
Kalla itha dukkati alardu dakkan dakkan
Kallā 'Idhā Dukkati Al-'Arđu Dakkāan Dakkāan
When the earth is crushed into small pieces
Ayah 22
Wajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan
Wa Jā'a Rabbuka Wa Al-Malaku Şaffāan Şaffāan
and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you
Ayah 23
Wajeea yawmaithin bijahannama yawmaithin yatathakkaru alinsanu waanna lahu alththikra
Wa Jī'a Yawma'idhin Bijahannama Yawma'idhin Yatadhakkaru Al-'Insānu Wa 'Anná Lahu Adh-Dhikrá
On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him
Ayah 24
Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee
Yaqūlu Yā Laytanī Qaddamtu Liĥayātī
He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life
Ayah 25
Fayawmaithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun
Fayawma'idhin Lā Yu`adhibu `Adhābahu 'Aĥadun
On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled
Ayah 26
Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun
Wa Lā Yūthiqu Wathāqahu 'Aĥadun
And His bonds will be such as none other can bind
Ayah 27
Ya ayyatuha alnnafsu almutmainnatu
Yā 'Ayyatuhā An-Nafsu Al-Muţma'innahu
Serene soul
Ayah 28
IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyatan
Arji`ī 'Ilá Rabbiki Rāđiyatan Marđīyahan
return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you
Ayah 29
Faodkhulee fee AAibadee
Fādkhulī Fī `Ibādī
Enter among My servants
Ayah 30
Waodkhulee jannatee
Wa Adkhulī Jannatī
into My Paradise
